I can’t handle it

two children pulling at their hair. Can't handle itMinds love dramatic statements. They also love ceilings, boxes, and limits.

So, your brain will spit out all sorts of sensational statements that, if you don’t know better, you might be very tempted to take seriously.

It’ll say things like “I can’t handle this”.

“I don’t know how I’ll make it through.”

“I’m lost. I’m floundering. I don’t know what to do next.”

Your brain says these things as you’re already “handling”. There really is no other option. It talks about your survival as you’re clearly surviving.

It doles out these ominous threats as if it has anything to do with the task at hand. The “I” your mind puts in charge of making it through, or knowing what to do next, is not actually in charge of those things.

In other words, brains don’t know how to make it through. They don’t see what’s next and they can’t handle it. But that’s irrelevant. These aren’t the job of a brain.

They aren’t the job of you.  They happen, as all things simply happen.

So the next time your mind tells you a scary story about what “you” can’t handle, remember this. Your brain thinks it can handle it, but it doesn’t need to.
